Richland second graders inspired to read with Strayer mentors

With research supporting the benefits for both age groups when middle school students read with elementary students, Strayer Middle School seventh graders of reading teacher Bruce Russell met with Karen Hearn's second graders at Richland Elementary School.

The seventh graders were reminded how much they have grown as readers and also had the chance to show the second graders how to read with fluency, a skill that Hearn has been working on with her students.

"It's a real confidence booster for seventh graders as they are now the ones helping someone read," Russell said. "The second graders were so proud to share their reading ability, and practice their fluency with the Strayer kids.

"Beyond the academics, seeing the excitement from the students well worth the time spent arranging the opportunity."
