The school district employs four certified school nurses and additional nurses assistants (registered nurses) for its ten school buildings.
Nurses are available during the school day to provide first aid for injuries and illnesses consistent with School Board policy. Nurses are the schools’ liaison with parents on matters of health and safety.
Nurses oversee the district’s compliance with Commonwealth health requirements:
Students may be exempted from the above mandated school screenings upon written parental request to the school nurse.
Parents are encouraged to have their child’s pediatrician or family physician and dentist complete medical and dental examinations.
When it is necessary for a child to take a prescribed medication in school, the following policy is adhered to: prescription medication must be current and in an original, properly labeled, prescription container. Written instructions, signed by the parent or guardian, must accompany this medication. The school nurse or building principal must be informed of such medication requirements.
Students are not permitted to have medications on their person during the school day, with the exception of asthma inhalers and EpiPens under the limited terms of the district’s policy.
